The regular work of BDS

What we do

  • Three to four practice debates every week
  • Workshops led by experienced mentors
  • Intra-organisation competitions for members
  • Hosting district, divisional and national tournaments
  • Sending BDS teams to external competitions

We work across five formats

Debate formats

Traditional Debate

Government vs Opposition, three speakers each, prepared scripts. The format BDS practises most.

Parliamentary Debate

Government and Opposition benches, a Speaker and points of information. Asian and British Parliamentary are the international English forms of the same tradition.

Barwari (Open) Debate

A solo format beyond for-and-against: each speaker interprets the topic in their own way.

Humorous Debate

Argument wrapped in comedy — wit, timing and wordplay.

Solo Speech

Three to five minutes on a single theme. BDS’s very first competition used this format.
